May Day International Labor Day
On May 1, 1886, over 200000 workers in Chicago held a general strike in pursuit of the implementation of the eight hour working system. After arduous and bloody struggle, they finally achieved victory. To commemorate this workers’ movement, on July 14, 1889, the Socialist Congress convened by Marxists from various countries solemnly opened in Paris, France. At the conference, representatives unanimously agreed to designate May 1st as a common holiday for the international proletariat. This resolution has received positive responses from workers from all over the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class of European and American countries took the lead in taking to the streets, holding grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legitimate rights and interests. From then on, on this day, working people from all over the world will gather and march to celebrate.
The celebration of Labor Day by the Chinese people can be traced back to 1918
In 1918, some revolutionary intellectuals distributed flyers introducing May Day to the masses in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Hankou, and other places. On May 1, 1920, the workers in industrial city such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Jiujiang and Tangshan marched to the street markets and held a massive parade and rally, which was the first May Day in Chinese history.
