The Origin of Qixi Festival:
Qixi Festival, also known as China’s Valentine’s Day, is one of the important traditional festivals in China. It originates from an ancient and romantic legend and is considered one of the most important love festivals in China.
According to legend, in ancient times, there was a ten day mistake in the sky, and the Cowherd and Weaver Girl were two of the stars. Niulang is a cattle fairy who herds sheep, while Zhinu is the seven daughters of the Heavenly Emperor. The Cowherd and Weaver Girl fell in love and violated the Heavenly Way, forming a marriage without permission. When the Heavenly Emperor learned about it, he became angry and separated them, allowing them to be separated by a river. It was not until July 7th of each year that they were allowed to meet again.
According to tradition, Qixi Festival is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On this day, people will celebrate the reunion of Cowherd and Weaver Girl, and express their love and wishes. On this day, people pray to the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, hoping to receive the blessings of love and a happy marriage.
There are many traditional ways and activities to celebrate Qixi Festival. The most famous ones are the construction of “beam sheds” and the appreciation of the moon. The beam shed is a structure made of bamboo, colored paper strips, etc., symbolizing the bridge where the Cowherd and Weaver Girl meet. People will gather under the beam shed to admire the moon, eat fruits, write letters or pray together. In addition, there are also customs such as women begging for cleverness and releasing river lanterns.
In modern society, Qixi Festival has become a day to express love, missing and blessing. Many couples exchange gifts, flowers, date or participate in celebration activities together on this day. Businesses will also launch special goods and services for the Qixi Festival to meet people’s needs for love and romance.
Qixi Festival is not only a traditional festival, but also a symbol of love and happy marriage in Chinese culture. It combines people’s love stories and good wishes with myths and legends to create a romantic atmosphere and convey the power of love to everyone. Whether ancient or modern, Qixi Festival is a good time for people to miss, pray and celebrate love.
