May Day holiday history:
May Day holiday, also known as “International Labor Day”, is a common holiday for working people around the world, originating from a workers’ strike in Chicago, USA. On May 1, 1886, a general strike broke out among approximately 350000 workers in cities such as Chicago in the United States, demanding improvements in working conditions and achieving 8 hours of work per day. This struggle ultimately forced capitalists to accept the demands of the workers.
In commemoration of this workers’ movement, in July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels , held a congress in Paris and decided to designate May 1st as International Labor Day, and designated this day as an annual demonstration for international workers. This resolution has received positive responses from workers around the world, and every year on this day, working people from all over the world will hold activities to celebrate.
In China, the celebration of Labor Day can be traced back to 1918, but the first large-scale commemoration of International Labor Day by Chinese workers was in 1920. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People’s Government designated May 1st as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949. With the changes in society, the way May Day is celebrated is also changing. At first, the celebration of May Day was mostly organized and unified activities such as gatherings and parades, with a relatively simple content. In September 1999, the State Council reformed and introduced a new statutory vacation system, which includes a seven day national holiday on National Day, Spring Festival, and May Day each year. The May Day holiday in 2000 sparked a nationwide tourism boom, and the 7-day holiday was known as the “Golden Week of Tourism”.
